HIIM Master Program
Master of Health Informatics and Information Management Degree Program
The Health Informatics and Information Management program at UMMC's School of Health Related Professions offers a master of health informatics and health information management (MHIIM) degree.
The online degree program prepares students to develop information systems for quality patient care; facility reimbursement; medical research; health planning; and health care evaluation as required by the changing health care environment. The program's mission is to educate outstanding professionals who can contribute to high quality health care through development, implementation, and refinement of health information systems.
Two tracks within the program allow students to emphasize either health information management (HIM) or health informatics (HI). The choice of track depends upon a student's career goals rather than past education or experience.
Graduates will have a thorough knowledge of health care data resources administration, healthcare data security oversight, strategic and operational information resource planning, clinical data analysis, clinical classification systems, medical vocabularies, enterprise-wide master patient index systems, clinical decision support systems, information systems development and implementation of systems such as electronic health records.
Health information management track
This track emphasizes management and administration of health care data and information systems. Additional electives taken in the HIM track allow the student to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association by virtue of CAHIIM accreditation of the baccalaureate program.
Health informatics track
This track addresses design and development of information systems, with an emphasis on applied clinical informatics. Various certifications are available to graduates of the HI track, depending upon the graduate's previous work experience and career goals.
